Juniper versus Cisco…thoughts?

We're splitting our HQ in two, moving about 40 folks over to a new location. We have an Avaya phone system and will be deploying IP phones at the new site over a pair of bonded point-to-point T1's.

Juniper versus Cisco…thoughts?

We're splitting our HQ in two, moving about 40 folks over to a new location. We have an Avaya phone system and will be deploying IP phones at the new site over a pair of bonded point-to-point T1's.

Our phone vendor is recommending Juniper J2300's on both ends…I've read a few bad reviews and some good reviews of Juniper. I'm cross-shopping a Cisco 1841 on one end (costs about $400 more than the Juniper) and a Cisco 2811 on the other end (costs more but has 4 WIC slots…more on that later).

The reason I'm looking at a beefier router on the HQ end is that I'd like to potentially retire some of our SonicWALL devices to sort of 'clean up' what has become a pretty complex network and condense them into one chassis….and I hear that Juniper's strength is firewalls…in which case realistically I'd probably go for a J2320, again to get the extra slots…but the 2320 costs about the same as the Cisco….

…so do I go with the newcomer Juniper or do I 'Pay the Piper' for Cisco?

I have just recently done a factory reinstall so nearly everything on my computer is fresh. I finally got around to getting my old VoIP programs such as Skype, Ventrilo, and Mumble. After a few minutes of usage (first on mumble, then on every other program as i found out), I began to notice a slight degradation of quality of incoming voices. Then I noticed the game I was playing alongside, as well as my ability to input voice, began to lag. The problems soon scaled to an extreme point. Incoming sounds stuttered each syllable 3 times over and it took well over 3 seconds for my push-to-talk key to even be recognized as pressed. I believe friends said my own voice was being stuttered as well.

I soon went to shift my laptop and actually burned myself from the heat being put out. Now this laptop isnt the best but it has never been this bad before. The game being played has never caused overheating, nor has the combination of game/voip programs caused any issue before I reinstalled everything. I shut down and left it to cool. Just now I tried another usually-working combination of programs, and after a few minutes, the exact same happened. Stuttering voice, sound chopping, game lag. I checked the cpu usage at this point, it was maxed. I closed EVERYTHING down and the CPU is still at 60-80%, sound is still choppy, and my laptop is still overheating slightly. Even my mouse movements are lagging… What is going on?!

To have this issue after nothing extraneous has been installed is crazy. To have the issue still occur after closing all programs not essential to running the laptop correctly is even crazier. Can anyone explain why this is occurring and any possible solution? I cant explain in any more detail than I just have.

TORONTO – Counsel Corp. (TSX:CXS), a Toronto-based asset management firm, announced Thursday that subsidiary C2 Communications Technologies Inc. has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Paetec Corp., Matrix Telecom Inc., Windstream Corp. and Telephone and Data Systems Inc.

The complaint alleges that the defendants’ services and systems utilizing Voice over Internet Protocol infringe on a C2 patent.

The allegations have yet to be proven in court.

The complaint was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, and seeks an injunction, monetary damages and costs.

C2’s primary business is the development and licensing of its patents, which include two foundational patents in VoIP technology. C2 is also involved in the acquisition and disposition of distressed and surplus assets through its interest in Counsel RB Capital LLC.

Counsel owns 91 per cent of C2 parent company C2 Global Technologies Inc.

Last fall, C2 settled a VoIP patent infringement suit in the U.S. that brought it US$17.6 million in revenue through settlement and licence agreements with Qwest, Global Crossing and Level 3.

Other defendants in the suit who had already settled with C2 included AT&T, Verizon, Bellsouth, Sprint Nextel and Global Crossing.

Shares in Counsel Corp. were unchanged at 70 cents on the TSX.

Can I set up VOIP as long as I have the right bandwidth? I don't want to pay so much money with these companies that charge so many fees and only give “good prices” when getting package deals.
